Who we are
Glance: Veterans Claim & Benefits Tracker ("Glance") is a Chrome extension made by a veteran for veterans, published by 4vetsbyvets. It is free, and its source code is MIT-licensed. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or made by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VA.gov is the official source of your information.
What Glance reads
The first time you open Glance, it shows a short screen that says what it reads and asks you to press I agree. Nothing is read from VA.gov before that. After you agree, when you are signed in to VA.gov in your browser and press Check now, Glance reads your own information from VA.gov:
- Claims: status and steps, requests from VA, names of documents on your claims, failed uploads, and decisions
- Money: VA debts, medical copay balances, and payment history (date, amount, type and method; no bank account numbers)
- Rating and health: your disability rating, rated and claimed conditions, and upcoming VA health appointments (date, time, facility, clinic, type of care, and in person or video)
- Other: your intent to file, and your representative's name if you have one
Some of this is health information and financial information.
Glance only reads. It never submits, uploads, changes or deletes anything on VA.gov. It never sees or stores your VA.gov password, and it does not read your cookies or sign-in tokens.
How Glance uses it
Only to show you what needs your attention on your claims and benefits, what changed since your last visit, and the number on the toolbar button. Nothing else.
After you agree and press Check now, Glance checks VA.gov again on a timer while Chrome is open (every hour by default; you can change how often in Settings). Desktop alerts are off unless you turn them on.
Where it is kept
- Only on your device, in Chrome's extension storage (
chrome.storage.local). - Saved data is encrypted at rest with AES-256 (AES-GCM). The key is created on your device, cannot be exported, and never leaves it.
- Your settings (such as how often to check) are stored unencrypted. They contain no personal information.
- There is no Glance server, no account, no analytics, no ads, no tracking, and no third-party code.
- The only website Glance contacts is VA.gov (
api.va.gov), over HTTPS, using the sign-in you already have.
Encryption protects the saved file on disk. Anyone who can use your Chrome profile can still open Glance and see your information. If you share a computer, use your own Chrome profile.
Who it is shared with
No one. Glance does not sell, rent, share or transfer your information to anyone, including us. We never receive it. No human reads it. It is never used for advertising, credit or lending decisions.
Your choices
- Delete: Settings → Delete all removes everything Glance saved. Removing the extension also removes it.
- Export: Settings → Export saves a copy as a file you keep.
- Try without your data: example mode uses a made-up veteran and reads nothing from VA.gov.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
In plain terms: Glance uses your information only for its single purpose (showing you your own VA.gov claim and benefit status). It does not transfer it, does not let people read it, and does not use it for ads or credit decisions. Glance does not use any Google APIs to get your data; this statement covers everything Glance handles.
Children
Glance is meant for veterans and is not directed to children under 13.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. Glance will not start sending your data anywhere without a new version that asks you first.
